RUMOR: Microsoft in talks to acquire Minecraft
#1
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is currently in talks to acquire Minecraft for two billion dollars.
So, what do you guys think about this rumor? What are your thoughts on if it ever actually happened?

I mean, at least it's not EA. Microsoft has done some good things with purchased IPs in the past. It's going to be a wait and see if it even happens, but I'm all for giving them a chance. Not like there would be an update from the Microsoft version of Mojang that we could use for about 6 months anyways lol

Damn beat me to it. Was just about to make this thread. It could go really great or terribly bad. I mean a company with Microsoft resources could really knock it out of the park. Or cut off all mod support and commercialize the hell out of it.

The New York Times has it now as well:

Bloomberg claims that Notch himself is the one trying to sell it off.

I've said unkind things about mojang in the past but to be honest, I kinda hope they hold onto it. As churched said, EA might go down the rout of commercialising minecraft to the point of stupidity and I doubt EA would be interested in modding. I feel like some of that community feel would be lost also. That's just me. However there is a chance they might do some crazy things and make the game way better. But who knows.

I do not see how they can say no to 2 billion dollars. That is God money. Enough that no one at Mojang will need to worry about anything for three generations. More if they invest it properly. I do think things would change quit a bit but Microsoft has a new guard so to speak. Gates and Ballmer both stepped down from the board as well. Which might be why Notch is in serious talks. Only time will tell.

Any way, I hear that Satya Nadella is a huge fan of Scrolls. So that would explain it.

Really hard to tell if Microsoft will give the game a new lease of life or ruin it entirely. I still haven't forgiven them for Rareware....oh god that still haunts my dreams.

It isn't about a new lease on life. Minecraft is more or less on auto pilot. Assuming they allow the modding community to do what they do. A big driver for the investment I think comes from merchandise. I see MC stuff all the time at my sons school. Plus the cross over opportunities with there other IP.
